Definition

A coil spring is formed by winding wire spirally to create a series of stacked coils. Coil springs can take various forms, including compression, torsion, extension, or conical springs, all of which consist of helically wound wire coils. While there are many common calculations related to the physical dimensions of these coil springs, spring rate calculations can become a bit intricate. This is especially true for conical tapered springs, as they don't exert a constant force.

Inner Diameter:

Inner Diameter (ID) = Outer Diameter (OD) - 2 × Wire Diameter (WD)
ID = OD - 2WD

Outer Diameter:

Outer Diameter (OD) = Inner Diameter (ID) + 2 × Wire Diameter (WD)
OD = ID + 2WD

Wire Diameter:

Wire Diameter (WD) = Outer Diameter (OD) - Inner Diameter (ID)
WD = OD - ID

Mean Diameter:

Mean Diameter (MD) = Inner Diameter (ID) + Wire Diameter (WD)
MD = ID + WD

or

Mean Diameter (MD) = Outer Diameter (OD) - Wire Diameter (WD)
MD = OD - WD

Spring Index:

Spring Index (I) = Mean Diameter (MD) ÷ Wire Diameter (WD)
I = MD ÷ WD

Total Coils:

Total Coils (TC) = Body Length (BL) ÷ Wire Diameter (WD) - 1
TC = BL ÷ WD - 1

Load:

Load (L) = Rate (R) × Distance Traveled (DT)
L = R × DT

Distance Traveled:

Distance Traveled (DT) = Load (L) ÷ Rate (R)
DT = L ÷ R

Rate:

Rate (R) = Load (L) ÷ Distance Traveled (DT)
R = L ÷ DT
